The Suburban Garden

Dear Reader,

We are into May and there is hope for warmer temperatures remaining steady, but here in coastal Virginia today we are feeling the effects of a tropical storm. These gray clouds, wind and rain are in sharp contrast to the beautiful warm sunny weekend we had here. It was a perfect weekend for working in our little garden.

We have had a small vegetable garden for several years and each year we experiment with different plants and growing methods. This year in addition to our usual tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, beans, watermelon, squash, zucchini, onions and cucumbers we are growing hot peppers. My goal is try make my own hot sauce. I’ve also expanded the herb garden a little. We have cilantro, chamomile, basil, oregano, stevia, chives, lavender and thyme.

The herbs always do very well and we dry many of them for use later. I am going to try to make my own oil of oregano this year in addition to the hot sauce. I am anxious to find out how well the stevia that works when brewing up some sweet tea.

This weekend, we made our own tomato cages from a small roll of fencing we found at Restore for only $5. We made 7 cages out of it, so that worked out really well and it was very easy (pictures forth coming).

Writing continues and new releases are expected this summer.

Stay well.
